previously on modern family: election day

Tragic news on Modern Family, Walt, Luke’s bestie has passed on. Though Phil wants to tell him slowly, Claire decides it’s best to just get it all out at once, apparently with a nervous smile. Luke barely reacts, which disturbs Claire. So Claire decides to try and help Luke get in touch with his feelings. Phil finds out that Walt was estranged from his daughter, so he decides to have a father daughter adventure with Alex. It doesn’t go so well and all his plans foil. They do however stop at a diner and get food poisoning together, which bonds them.

Cam’s dad Merle (Barry Corbin, Whitey from One Tree Hill) comes for a visit and Mitchell is planning a dinner with both dad’s. Cam predicts that Jay and Gloria won’t show, since Jay always seems to make an excuse to not spend time with Jay’s dad. Mitchell defends his dad, but when he calls to confirm, he finds Jay is giving an excuse. Mitchell won’t take no for an answer. Jay reveals the reason he doesn’t like spending time with Cam’s dad is because he always feels like Merle makes Mitchell out to be the wife in the relationship. Jay and Merle have it out and settle their issues, right as Mitchell and Cam start competing about whose father is more of a tough guy. It remains to be seen.

Haley and her friends want to have a pool party, but the host fell sick, so she turns to Gloria to see if she’ll allow them to have the party there. Gloria inquires about a chaperone. Haley says that her mother has approved the chaperone, which it turns out, is her uncle….Manny. Gloria says she can have the party as long as Manny can go, since he needs to have fun. Haley’s plan works, until Gloria gets home and discovers that the chaperone was Manny. Gloria yells at Manny for not having more fun and at Haley for having too much fun. As punishment, the party must go on.

• Claire can’t stop smiling when she tells the Meal on Wheels girl and the delivery guy that Walt is dead.
• Mitchell and Cam fighting over whose Dad is tougher.
• Phil writing Alex’s initials on the diner sign.

Kristen is a confused young adult who sometimes thinks TV shows are actually her life. Wouldn’t that be cool?
