And a new season of brilliance begins…
It’s Jay’s 65th birthday, bring on the old man jokes. No worries, Manny’s got us covered. Dinner at 4pm, wrinkles, and…… Jay has requested a quiet birthday, with no surprises. Lucky for him, his son-in-law Phil doesn’t listen to anything he says, ever, which is why Phil kidnaps Jay for a fun birthday outing with some friends. A quiet day fishing is really exactly what Jay needed, minus the two unintentional dips in the water, both as a result of Phil. Oh and the punch in the face, because that’s obviously how to calm a panicked person down. The fishing trip is filled with what Jay has to look forward to, a vegetable garden, golf outings, and pickled cucumbers. Things are looking….bleak.
Cameron and Mitchell are avoiding the giant elephant in the room…..sent over by Pepper to celebrate adopting their baby. It’s not an easy thing to avoid, but it’s slight easier than avoiding the 800 lb. gorilla also sent my Pepper. They decide to donate the awful stuffed animals, but they place won’t take them. Meanwhile Lily keeps playing the “if I can’t have a baby brother then I want a [fill in the blank]”card, which leads Cam and Mitchell to the kitten adoption. Not ready to jump through a whole new round of hoops, especially to adopt a kitten, they walk away. Finally, they address the elephant in the room and talk about how upset they are at losing the baby and decide to get away from a bit. Also they’re still getting a kitten.
Gloria is exceedingly nervous about Jay’s no surprise rule, because she has a surprise of her own to share. She’s pregnant, which we already knew (I think). She tells Manny, who is worried about being replaced, and Claire who worries Jay will say something insensitive so she warns him to be supportive, without actually telling him what’s up. The biggest surprise of the episode (though you probably saw it coming) Jay is relieved and thrilled about Gloria’s news. He isn’t looking forward to the idea of his life winding down. And a new baby is exactly how he can make sure that doesn’t happen.
Also there was prom. Alex had fun and helped clean up. Haley and Dylan got drunk and Dylan’s homeless.
