thoughts on shameless: fiona interrupted

Previously on ShamelessJust Like The Pilgrims Intended

  • The Gallaghers try to put themselves together mentally after Monica’s attempted suicide.
  • Fiona wants to meet Jimmy’s family.
  • Karen and Jody begin taking care of Karen’s baby against her will.
  • Fiona asks Lip to come back home but he denies her.
  • While at dinner with Jimmy’s family, Ian realizes that  the man he has been having a sexual relationship with  is Jimmy’s father.
  • Fiona passes her GED test and Lip returns to school to take his AP Physics final.
  • Frank – with Debbie’s help – hatches a plan to free Monica from the psychiatric institution.
  • Lip tells Karen that he thinks she should let Sheila take care of her child, even if only for a little while.
  • After Frank breaks Monica out, she escapes with her new beau. She tells Debbie that they are “better off without her”.
  • Karen packs her stuff and leaves after Sheila chooses the baby over her.
  • Lip returns to the Gallagher house.
  • Estefania comes back to Jimmy for help after she has taken a beating from Marco.

Let It Go, Lip: Karen is, quite possibly, the worst human being ever. No matter how many times Lip tries to justify her actions or attempt to do the right thing she always find a way to do the worst possible thing. Yeah, loves makes you do dumb things and all that jazz but seriously Lip, let it go. Maybe Estefania can help speed up the process?

What Monica Does Best: Did I think Monica was better off in the psychiatric institution? Yes. Did I think she would actually be “better” after coming out? Yes. Did I think she would start a relationship with Dharma Jenna Elfman and leave her family behind again? Of course I did! I know that everyone’s hopes were up about Monica sticking around this time but maybe they should all just get use to Frank being twice as bad a parent all by himself. Bye Monica, hope you come back sometime next season just so your kids can tell you to f*** off.

Just One More Episode: I’ve publicly said I didn’t think Jimmy and Fiona would get into a full-fledged relationship until season three. I was wrong. So what.

Dude, I’m Doing Your Dad: I haven’t quite figured out the potential backlash for Ian and Lloyd’s relationship being exposed yet but I don’t think Jimmy is going to be that torn about it. Jimmy seems to be a bit estranged in regards to his family anyway. It may not be the largest plot line come season three but I hope that we see it get addressed somehow.

thoughts on shameless: just like the pilgrims intended

  • Lip leaves recorded messages for his soon to be adopted child.
  • Monica is in a near catatonic state after burning out on illegal drugs.
  • Frank gets Monica to help him get money from his brother Clayton, who always “had a thing” for her.
  • Marcos finally makes it to Chicago.
  • Karen goes into labor. She also tells Sheila that it’s fine that she has sex with Jody.
  • Fiona invites Lip over for Thanksgiving.
  • Mandy wants Lip to “talk about” the state of their new relationship.
  • Debbie is worried about hereditary depression.
  • Monica slits her wrists during Thanksgiving dinner but makes it to the hospital in time to receive treatment.
  • Karen gives birth to an Asian child with Down’s Syndrome. The potential adopting couple are clearly disappointed so they leave without the child. Sheila and Jody then kidnap the newborn.

Secret Cutting: It was fun seeing Monica in her prime (I guess) during previous episodes so I was pretty sad that she had been reduced to such a state. Yeah, she’s a reckless tornado charged by drugs and sex but…that’s about it really. She gave the family a glimpse of hope to boost morale. When she came back to the house I never expected her to stay this long but I hope she recovers and comes back to the house next season.

Timmy Wong, Really?! Of course the baby wasn’t Lip’s. Did I think it was going to be so blatantly obvious? (insert Asian newborn) No. I really like Lip as a character. Although the Gallagher household/family is an extreme case, Lip is  just struggling to find out where he belongs each season. this time he thought it was with Karen and what he thought was to be  his child. Clearly that answer was wrong. I just hope Lip isn’t spending the majority of his time being everyone else’s punching bag next season.

(Not Your) Born Identity: It was a bold move giving Marcos an already false identity as a false identity – hope I didn’t lose you there – but am I the only one who thinks that’s going to come back to haunt Jimmy in the future?  But when a naked man with a corkscrew in his arse – meat not cavity – has his foot on your chest with intent to kill you any plan becomes your best plan.

Newborn-Friendly Hospice: When it comes to Sheila, I can’t even pretend to think that I understand what is going through her mind. There is no way she gets to keep Karen’s child but I want to see how they go about trying to do so. I could be wrong though. The two most incompetent characters on the show might be parenting savants.

thoughts on shameless: hurricane monica

Previously on Shameless: Parenthood

  • Monica says she is back in the Gallagher house to stay.
  • Lip searches for a place to stay since he left home. Karen says he has to pay rent. Veronica tells him to go home. Steve lets him stay with him only if he hacks into someone’s voicemail account.
  • Frank and Monica sneak into Sheila’s house to find the money Grammy had before she died. They find nothing and Frank eventually finds out, from Jody, that he mailed the money to Frank’s brothers.
  • Jody ad Sheila get intimate after they spend so much time trying to get him back in Karen’s good graces.
  • Monica begins to break through with Ian. She takes him out to a gay club and tells him not to be ashamed of who he is.
  • Lip finds out that Estefania is in love – or lust at the least – with another man.
  • Fiona still has her suspicions about Monica being back around the kids because she doesn’t think it is going to be long-term.

Third Time’s The Charm: Monica’s return seems to be going fairly well to this point. She isn’t still with “Bob”. She isn’t trying to get sole custody of Liam. And she seems to want back in her children’s lives. I questioned her motives last season but now I think she really does mean to do the right thing.  Maybe I’m naive – or just stupid – but I’m giving her a chance this time around. We know she can be just as erratic and reckless as Frank but she actually seems to be concerned with the well-being of her children. Now I sit back and wait until this blows up in my face.

Mother Knows Best: I know Jody was desperate to get back in the house full-time but I’m not sure he made the right decision. Sheila can be a bit…well…anal. But if he likes an occasional “pegging” session (just go ahead and wiki that because I try to keep things SFW around here) then more power to you. This is definitely going to get a reaction from Karen but I’m just not sure how postal she is going to go but I think you can throw “mommy issues” to her ever-growing list of problems.

Estefaina’s Fraud: I knew there was something more to Estefania being on he phone 87% of the time she was on screen. I don’t speak Portuguese so I couldn’t validate my suspicions until Lip came along. But it didn’t really take that much effort to figure out what she was saying during her conversation at Steve’s place. She was confident enough to be in her underwear with another man, virtually, in the same room with her as she engaged in some steamy phone sex so she clearly doesn’t think that much of it. I still would like to see her not-so-hidden relationship come to a head somehow. Whether it be Steve confronting her with the help of an iPhone app or by her druglord father making a trip to the states to get her I just want there to be some conclusion before the season ends.

thoughts on shameless: parenthood

Previously on Shameless: A Bottle of Jean Nate

  • Lip tells Fiona that he dropped out of school during his Senior year.
  • Fiona tells Lip that she will go back and finish high school if he does the same.
  • Steve/Jimmy decides to coach Carl’s football team.
  • Karen and Lip shop around for adoption ideas.
  • Frank catches Ian and Mickey having sex.
  • Mickey sets out to kill Frank so he doesn’t tell everyone what he saw.
  • Lip gets expelled from school but his guidance counselor tells Fiona that another school will except him.
  • Mickey decides not to kill Frank…but he punches a cop instead to intentionally violate his probation.
  • Lip tells Fiona that he isn’t going to school anymore. Fiona gives him an ultimatum: School or leave. Lip leaves…
  • Grammy gives Sheila permission to suffocate her because she doesn’t want to suffer with her cancer anymore.
  • Frank goes to his ex-wife Monica after he finds out his mother is dead.

The Good Ole High School Try: Fiona’s high school days – or education in general – have been a recurring topic this season so this storyline seems to fit. She does everything else so why not go back to school. Her GED program might not be the equivalent to Lip’s actual schoolwork but she sets a great example. I think she’ll complete the program but I don’t see her continuing past that. She has too much to do at home and she isn’t going to leave the reigns in the hands of Lip or Ian and definitely not Frank.

Baby to the Highest Bidder: Lip has been planing on taking care of Karen’s child since he found out she was pregnant but she has her mind set on getting rid of the baby. We all know Lip has “daddy issues” – and rightfully so – but when is he going to tell Karen he would rather make sure the child is taken care of with affection as opposed to money? Lip gets stupid when it comes to Karen but he is only torturing himself the more he lets it go on. She tends to walk right over him – and any other man in her life for that matter. Lip must love being a glutton for psychological punishment because I don’t see why he has let this go on for as long as it has.

Angel of Death? Now that Grammy’s ticker doesn’t tock anymore is Frank going to stop being emo? Hopefully. Is he going to mad horrible decisions because of it? His name IS Frank Gallagher. Case in point, why is he going back to Monica (Chloe Webb)? Didn’t her and her truck driving lesbian lover cause enough hell last season? I could be wrong though. Maybe she comes back and actually tries to do what’s right for the family instead of for herself.

(No Longer) Lost in Translation: Maybe it’s nothing but does Estefania’s phone conversation tip us off to a confrontation in the future? She told someone that she “only wanted to be you” and she isn’t having sex with Steve. Also, she called Liam a “crack baby”.

Previously on Shameless: Can I Have A Mother

  • Jessica invites Fiona to a party on one of her “friend’s boat”.
  • Kevin and Veronica look for a pet as a replacement for Ethel.
  • Karen goes to Lip for advice on how to get out of her marriage with Jody.
  • Peggy recruits Carl to help her get her meth lab operation running again.
  • Fiona confronts Steve/Jimmy about all of his lies.
  • Lip decides to drop out of school to get a job to support Karen’s child.
  • Jessica makes a move on Fiona but it doesn’t pan out as she had hoped it would.
  • Lip and Ian – with the help of Peggy – decide that a fight will settle their dispute.

Fool Me Once… Maybe I was delusional in thinking that Fiona would just let Steve right back into her life. I knew he had wronged her in surplus – and even brought Lip along for the ride for good measure. I know he got married to a stranger, lived a double life, and stole cars but somewhere around there they both want to be together. I don’t want to believe that her and Steve are completely done but I understand he has to do more than he usually would to gain Fiona’s trust back. She doesn’t allow that many people outside her family to get close to her (with the exception of Kevin and Veronica) and Steve is only making it worse.

A Grandmother’s Love: Seriously Grammy Peggy? A meth lab? And you choose Carl?! That plan is destined for failure. I knew by the end of the episode Carl was either going to blow something up or needing a really good dental plan. Also, don’t do meth. I hope that little venture into the hardcore drug production was just this episode though. She can keep making Frank interact with his children for as long as she is around, since her cancer is, probably, going to lead to her demise fairly soon.

Room at the Alibi: Is Kev the new bar manager? He did ship Stan off to the old folk’s home because he wasn’t in any shape to run the Alibi Room not to mention just living by himself. I don’t think Ethel is coming back anytime soon so maybe his new promotion will keep him occupied.

Newlywed Bliss: When I think love I think “morningwood”, Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose“, and prenuptial agreements. Call me a romantic or whatever. I didn’t think Karen and Jody were going for the long haul or anything but didn’t they just get married last week? I’m all for Lip being happy but at this point it looks like Karen may be more “baby momma” material as opposed to an actual girlfriend.

The Kiss that Missed: If we thought Fiona was already having her fair share of problems with men this summer just add Jasmine to the mix and then it’s a party. I thought it was fairly obvious that Jasmine wanted more of a physical relationship with Fiona since we met her last season. I’m a pretty friendly guy and all but I don’t lick my friend’s ear to wake him up when a swift pillow to the face will suffice. I hope that Jasmine doesn’t just disappear now that Fiona has denied and embarrassed her, maybe she takes more of a “frienemy” role from here on out.
