thoughts on boardwalk empire: to the lost

Shoot First…: I knew the season finale was going to be full of people getting deceased real fast but it took all of 30 seconds for a few Klansmen to get there. I didn’t think Jimmy and Richard were going to be the one to make the hit but they did an awesome job nonetheless. I was a bit worried that it would put him on the wrong side with Leander and the other “founders” of Atlantic City but it didn’t seem to have any immediate repercussions.

Marriage & Murder: “Margaret, I need you to marry me.” Nucky has to be the most romantic gentleman in all of Atlantic City. As his trials looms closer Nucky had to make every play he could to get from getting sent to jail for the rest of his life so why not continue to manipulate Margaret. At this point I’m starting to feel sorry for her because she has probably been through the most stress and I know her decision to marry Nucky isn’t going to make things any easier. Meanwhile at the Treasurer’s Office, Jimmy and Richard kill James Neary and make it seem like a suicide to help Nucky once again.

Nucky’s Second Chance: Even though Nucky had moments this season where I wouldn’t have minded if he went to prison for some time I was glad when his case was a mistrial. He is, obviously, the character with the most versatility in the show and all the storylines run through him at some point. I do see him meeting an end that is just as epic as his time as the “Treasurer” of Atlantic City but for now I’m fine with a little more corruption.

My Brother’s Keeper: Listen bro, I know you tried to have me killed and all that but if you just go to jail for a year consider us even. I know that isn’t a verbatim version of Nucky’s plan for his brother Eli but that’s pretty much what happened. A few times during the season I thought Eli wasn’t going to make it out of the season alive but I guess blood is really thicker than water when it comes to Nucky. Or maybe he just saw Eli’s going to prison as just another way to keep him from incarceration.

“The only way it could end”: Talk about being blindsided! The furthest thing from my mind was seeing Jimmy getting killed…before Horvitz no less. I thought Nucky had some compassion for Jimmy’s situation and was actually giving Jimmy a gift – of sorts – by handing him Horvitz. With Jimmy out of the way now I can’t imagine who is going to oppose Nucky going forward. We see that Margaret signed over her land to Father Brennan’s church but I don’t think it will hinder Nucky to the point where his empire is diminished. Maybe he and Chalky White have a falling out or perhaps it will be time for the younger generation (Lansky, Lucky, Capone) to take the mantle.

boardwalk empire recapping: what does the bee do?

Camp Darmody

  • Jimmy makes a deal with Doyle to get alcohol.
  • The Commodore suffers a stoke while being “entertained” by Gillian.
  • Eli is scared that their operation is about to fall apart because Jimmy and Gillian are taking charge.
  • Jimmy and Richard head to Philadelphia to make a deal with Manny Horowitz (William Forsythe).
  • Gillian reminds a defenseless Commodore about when he took advantage of her sexually. She then begins to viciously slap the living hell outta him.

Nucky’s Empire

  • Nucky contacts Arnold Rothstein in order to obtain a port for his liquor shipment. He arranges for a port in Philadelphia.
  • Rothstein orders “Lucky” Luciano and Meyer Lansky to oversee the operation.
  • Nucky’s lawyer informs him that since Nucky shipped prostitutes across state borders he can make his case a federal offense. Which would allow the Attorney General to throw out his case.
  • Owen Slater makes a bomb for Nucky to blow up Doyle’s alcohol warehouse.

Chalky White

  • Chalky comes home from jail to learn that his daughter is to have a suitor over for dinner.
  • At a meeting held by influential members of the Negro community Chalky is pressed to make up for the deaths of the men killed by the KKK.
  • Nucky tells Chalky that he can’t help him right away and that he needs to be patient.
  • Chalky is drunk at the dinner and lashes out at his family and house guest. He removes himself from the dinner and stays outside for the remainder.

Margeret Schroeder

  • Nucky gives Margeret money for the “weekly affairs” and to give the housekeeping staff a two dollar bonus for the week.
  • Margeret doesn’t like that Nucky is giving away money when things are tight.
  • When she gives the staff their bonuses they inform her that Nucky promised them a permanent raise when he came home drunk one day.
  • When Nucky informs her about the new federal charges she asks for $100 to get clothing for the kids but she puts it in her stash.

Angie and Richard

  • Richard comes the Darmody household to meet Jimmy but Angela is there painting instead. She asks him about being a model for her.
  • Richard tells Angie about the relationship he had with his sister in Wisconsin. He says that after he came back from the war things were never the same.
  • He says the she was the only person he ever loved. Angie seems to bond with Richard more so than Jimmy has done thus far.

boardwalk empire recapping: ourselves alone

Magaret is informed, by her housekeepers, that Nucky has been imprisoned for voting fraud. She seems to take things in stride and continues to carryout her daily routine. She does call Nucky’s suite to find out that he is about to get bailed out and that FBI agents are ransacking his office for information. She also has to make dinner preparations for one of Nucky’s guests.

Nucky finds himself sharing a prison cell with Chalky. Although I’m sure that was no coincidence. Nucky uses this time to ask that Chalky be patient through out the new shake-ups in Atlantic City. Chalky isn’t too thrilled about it naturally because he is the one that has to sit in a cell all day and deal with the constant attacks from the KKK. Nucky is free to go after his lawyer bails him out.

The Commodore is having a meeting with Nucky’s brother, Eli, and former business partners. The Commodore is making sure his plans on taking control of Atlantic City are clear and that the men in attendance know their roles. After the meeting, all of the members in attendance agree to follow the new regime with the exception of Damian. Jimmy is away in New York with a business proposal for Arnold Rothstein. Jimmy tells Rothstein that if he wants to get liquor for better prices with less hassle that he should do business together. The cautious Rothstein declines the offer but his assistant “Lucky” Luciano asks Jimmy to come meet him later. Although Lucky and Jimmy don’t have the best personal relationship, seeing as though Lucky is having sex with Jimmy’s mother, he agrees. At the meeting Lucky introduces Jimmy to his partner Meyer Lansky. They tell Jimmy that if he is willing to buy heroin from them then they would be willing to go into business with him and his new liquor ring.

Margeret shows up at Nucky’s suite pretending to be a pregnant woman in need of Nucky’s help. The agents fall for it and allow her access to the suite’s washroom for precautionary reasons. Later we find out that she manages to get Nucky’s ledger with all his illegal transactions and $20,000 “give or take”. I wasn’t expecting Margeret to be on board with Nucky’s operations but she seems to have chosen her side and is willing to show her support.

Meyer Lansky

As Nucky gets back into his suite, after the FBI has taken all they need, Damain comes to tell Nucky about the Commodore’s plan…until Eli calls. As Eli begins to indirectly tell Nucky that he is no longer supporting his “big brother” Nucky interrupts him and tells Eli that if he wants to get out of the situation to just say it and he will make things better. Eli never does. The Commodore introduces Eli to “the men that built (Atlantic) city” afterwards, members of the Ku Klux Klan.

We are introduced to Owen Slater, an assistant to John McGarrigle. An Irishman whom I assume we will be seeing more of in the season. His boss tells Nucky that Slater will be staying stateside when he goes back to Ireland. I’m not sure what to think of his character yet but he seems to have some connection with Margeret beyond just both being Irish. As the episode comes to an end and Margeret suggest that Nucky burn his ledger and to make a mental note of all his future transactions I can assume that she will have more influence over Nucky’s business decisions as opposed to just being the uninformed housewife.
