Sabotage! Life! Death! Cunning characters! Everything that anyone could hope for in the latest episode of The Walking Dead.

At the prison, an unknown person scatters a deer carcass around the yard, possibly to lure walkers onto the grounds. Meanwhile, Rick’s group discover that the inmates, Axel and Oscar, left their cell block and wish to join Rick’s group, claiming they are not like Alex. Rick, Daryl, and Glen are firmly against allowing Axel and Oscar to join their group on the premises that they may try to take over the prison, while T-Dawg (who finally has some decent lines!) is in favor of allowing them into the group. After some heated debate with T-Dawg, Rick decides to keep the inmates separated from the group.

Herhsel is making an extraordinary recovery after having his leg hacked off. Lori, Carl, and Beth all help Hershel regain his walking strength through crutches. While cruising slowly around the yard with Herhsel, their joy is cut short as walkers begin to approach them. Rick, Daryl, T-Dawg, and Glen quickly realize the situation that is at hand, and race to kill the walkers.  Chaos is quickly ensued as the group separates: Herhsel and Beth lock themselves behind a gate, Carl, Lori, and Maggie are chased off into the prison, and Carol and T-Dawg are running for their lives–in which T-Dawg is bitten in the shoulder in gory detail. It is clear T-Dawg is a deadman, and in his most heroic (and arguably, one of his only acts) sacrifices himself to the zombies so Carol can get away.

Upon investigation, Rick discovers that someone has cut a hole into the prison fence, which allowed for the walkers to get in. As he begins to confront Axel and Oscar, the prison alarm system sounds loudly–which attracts more hungry walkers to the scene. Oscar reveals that the back up generators have been triggered, and that there is someone in the prison who is trying to sabotage the group. Upon reaching the generator room, Rick and his group discover that another inmate is in the prison and the one behind the sabotage. The inmate tries to convince Axel and Oscar to kill Rick and his group so they can take back the prison. Oscar, who is holding a gun, shoots the inmate, ultimately sealing his loyalty deal.  Meanwhile, Lori has doubled over in pain, and it is clear that she is in labor (great timing, Lori!!). Carl and Maggie cannot continue running, so they lock themselves in a room, where Lori prepares to push the baby out. While she is pushing, Maggie discovers that there is too much blood coming out of Lori for this to be a healthy birth, and Lori must make a decision.

Lori realizes that her fate is sealed, and asks Maggie that she save the baby and cut her open at her cesarean scar. Lori makes amends with Carl, asks him to follow his moral values, and to take care of his father. In a very heart wrenching (and admittedly, stomach turning), Maggie cuts open Lori and delivers the baby. Lori dies, and Carl, who does not want his mother to turn, shoots her in the head. Once the chaos is over, the group meets up on the prison yard. Rick is in borderline hysterics as Lori and Carl have not returned to the group. However, Rick is pushed over the edge when a tear soaked Maggie steps out into the yard, with Carl and baby in hand but not Lori.

While all this is happening at the prison, Michonne and Andrea are still at Woodbury. Michonne wanders around the borders and discovers bullet holes and fresh blood, which she confronts the Governor about. Michonne later gives Andrea the details of their plans after leaving Woodbury: walking to the coast, finding a boat, and living out their days on an island. Andrea is still not sold  on carrying on outside of Woodbury, and continues to try to convince Michonne to stay. Andrea and Merle meet up, and Merle convinces her that they share a bond because they were abandoned and saved by the same groups.  In this moment of solidarity,  Andrea reveals the location of the farm where Daryl was last seen. Merle later tries to convince the Governor to let him take a team up to the farm to look for Daryl. The Governor does not approve, but assure Merle that if he can get harder evidence of Daryl’s whereabouts–and of the farm– he will personally accompany Merle.

Later on, the Governor and Andrea meet in a room and share a few drinks. The exchange a few stories about their families, and the Governor, who knows Michonne wants them to leave immediately, tells Andrea she is always welcome back at Woodbury. At their departing, the Governor reveals to Andrea his name to be Phillip. Andrea after tells Michonne she wants to stay in Woodbury a bit longer, and Michonne storms off.

Why T-Dawg had to die

I have said this multiple times, I always thought T-Dawg to be more of a filler character rather than having a major point of view. Sure, in season one he played a huge role in Merle’s fate because he dropped the key, but after that, T-Dawg seemed more like a background than a characters. However, this episode redeemed T-Dawg’s lack of character, as he argued in favor of the inmates, and sacrificed himself so that another character could live on another day.

Why Lori had to die

As much as I found Lori’s character annoying, I was saddened by her demise. However, I knew Lori had to die. With the lack of medical supplies and support, it was obvious that mom or both the mom and the baby were not going to make it. Similar to T-Dawg’s death, Lori’s sacrifice for another human being gave her redemption, which was ultimately what she wanted after all the drama she caused (not only getting pregnant in the first place, but causing a rift between Shane and Rick as well). Lori also was a prime candidate to die in this season because her death is going to push Rick to a whole new level. He is now fully in charge of Carl, a dwindling group of survivors, and now a new born baby. This is going to pose new struggles for the group.

Now, we’ve got a new vulnerable character in the mix, and it is going to be interesting how this will all pan out, and the new dangers it will bring.
